Jersey Jermier

As told by Jim Jermier, son

John “Jersey” Jermier was more than a beloved husband, father, and grandfather—he was a legendary figure at the University of Northern Iowa. During his long tenure, he helped guide the Panther athletic department through its historic transition from Division II to Division I, leaving a legacy that spanned decades.

Dad’s passion for sports and people stretched far beyond UNI. Jersey lettered in three sports at Coe College after serving four years with the U.S. Navy. He went on to coach, mentor and inspire athletes at both the high school and college level, eventually earning a place in three Athletics Halls of Fame—Coe College, Wayne State College and UNI.

Yet for all his accomplishments, Jersey’s proudest titles were husband, dad, and grandpa. He loved his family, friends, coaches, players, administrators—and above all, Joanne, his wife of 73 years. On April 12, 2025, Dad died peacefully at the Cedar Valley Hospice Home, surrounded by those he loved most.

Jersey had a way of lighting up every room he entered, and his stories — especially when shared with his grandkids — were legendary. He was positive, encouraging, joyful and a wonderful storyteller. Watching him tell stories of his past to his grandkids always brought so much laughter. It was pure joy.

Dad was one-of-a-kind — larger than life and full of life. He and mom experienced so much, always seeking connection with others. He never met a stranger and interacted with so many people throughout his life, even at the very end.

As his health declined, Cedar Valley Hospice stepped in to walk alongside us. The team supported Dad and our family when we needed it most. They assisted with the right medications, doctors’ appointments, regular check-ins, and helped preserve his dignity with personal hygiene needs. And they did it all with professionalism, gentleness, and compassion—not only for Dad, but for our whole family during a very difficult time. Dad’s health had deteriorated so much that even day-to-day tasks were difficult. The hospice team’s careful and compassionate touch kept things as normal for him and for us as could be hoped for.

I’m not sure what our family would have done without the expert care of the Cedar Valley Hospice team. Because of their support, we were able to focus on Dad, and he on us. We had quality time together, and he was able to enjoy time with the many visitors who came to see him.

Even in his final days, Dad showed positivity and strength. He often told us what an amazing life he’d had, how much he loved and was proud of us, and that he was at peace and ready to be called home.
