“Douglas ‘Doug’ Sturch knew no strangers and left a lasting impression on everyone he met. He loved his family, his friends, his church and community, sports and animals. He was always ready for an adventur! Doug kept everyone on their toes, and you never knew what might happen next. He only saw the good in everything and everyone. Seeing the world through his eyes was a true blessing.

Doug was born with Down Syndrome. Throughout his life, he faced multiple medical conditions associated with this, including heart and kidney ailments. Toward the end of his life, these medical conditions became more prevalent. Doug’s condition began to decline, and we knew we needed guidance and care specific to his growing needs. We reached out to Cedar Valley Hospice and Doug began receiving services immediately. These services and communication were reassuring and comforting to us. When the time came for Doug to transition from community-based living to facility living, Cedar Valley Hospice staff guided us through every step. Their support and expertise in navigating this difficult transition was outstanding.Â
For a very brief period of time, Doug’s condition did not warrant hospice coverage, so we went off the program. When his decline returned, he re-entered Cedar Valley Hospice. This time, we knew for sure Doug was beginning his final journey. The Cedar Valley Hospice staff were familiar with Doug and their returned presence was like welcoming family back to care for Doug.We are forever grateful for their insight and compassion. Up until the end, Doug was blowing kisses in the air. He showed his love for all of us, without needing words.

When Cedar Valley Hospice was walking alongside us, they thought of things we would not have. On our own, we were caught in each moment, just trying to survive. They were able to look from the outside in and offer guidance and advice that provided comfort for Doug and the family. It is never too early to bring in hospice!”
