Gloria Spiegel

As told by her friends at Cedar Valley Hospice

Gloria Spiegel was a longtime volunteer for Cedar Valley Hospice before she died at the Cedar Valley Hospice Home on July 14, 2025. Gloria began her journey with Cedar Valley Hospice in 2007, when she first completed the training to become a patient/family volunteer. With the specialized skills she gained, she spent the next 11 years serving at the Cedar Valley Hospice Home, where she touched the lives of hundreds of families, helping them feel cared for and at home during some of life’s most difficult moments. Over the years, Gloria gave more than 1,499 hours of her time and, in 2009, was recognized at the Iowa Hospice Volunteer Luncheon for her outstanding service.

In 2016, Gloria expanded her commitment by joining the Friends of Cedar Valley Hospice committee. In this role, she not only helped raise funds and awareness, but also became a true ambassador for our mission—sharing her story on Facebook, in her community, and with everyone she encountered. Gloria never waited to be asked; she simply showed up, ready to lend a hand wherever she was needed. Whether assisting with events or tackling behind-the-scenes projects, she gave her time joyfully and wholeheartedly. One memorable example was when our team needed 30 table decorations made from painted wine bottles. Gloria gladly took on the unglamorous work—sorting bottles at the redemption center, soaking off labels in her tub, and preparing each one so they would be ready for use. She approached every task, big or small, with a smile and a generous spirit.

Gloria will be remembered for plenty of things – her fashion sense, her quick wit, her love of the Iowa Hawkeyes and anything sweet – but most of all her giving spirit and kind heart. The Cedar Valley Hospice team was honored to have taken care of her at the Hospice Home during her final days, and her passing leaves a tremendous hole in our hospice family. Her kindness, dedication, and unwavering commitment to Cedar Valley Hospice will never be forgotten, and her legacy of compassion will continue to inspire us for years to come.

"Gloria was the perfect blend of sweet and sass. Her sharp wit and sense of humor always made volunteering with her so much fun. She brought a lot of energy to our events and had an incredible fashion sense that always made me feel underdressed."
