Marshall and Marlys were wonderful grandparents – hardworking and always willing to lend a hand. Towards the end of their lives, Marshall had dementia, and he would get frustrated when he couldn’t remember who people were. It was difficult to process for everyone in the family. So, when Marlys passed and we attended the funeral, we didn’t know how he would react, but he looked me in the eye and said “Annika, you’ve grown into a fine young woman.” He paused, then finished with: “It took a while, but it happened.” It was his classic humor, but that was the first time I’d heard him say my name in years, and something I’ll never forget.
